John, I am not sure what you are asking, nor what year motor you are asking about. If you need to remove the gearcase on a 70s or 80s inline motor, there should be 5 nuts and a hidden bolt holding it onto the midsection.

John;

Give us the s/n of the engine and we can get the parts listing for you.

Re: Problems with removing the gearbox (Mercury 650)

Thanks for your anwsers.

I think my engine is from the 70s.

The previeus owner of the engine removed the gears from the gearcase.. but i think he jus pulled it out by the gearshaft. Some of the gears are no lose in the case.
How can i put it together? do i need to remove the driveshaft first or can i put i together in the gearscase?

regards John

You can install the gears w/o removing the driveshaft. However, if the gearcase was disassembled, it implies there is something wrong with the components. In addition, certain gear clearances need to be maintained by shimming the gears. I would get a service manual and inspect the gears, bushings and bearings for tolerances and specifications. Complete used gearcases are pretty available as well.

John;

You said you think your engine is from the '70s. Better know for sure if you plan on swapping any component. You will need to know the s/n of your engine as well as the s/n of the replacement engine and p/n of the replacement LU. The same LU for a given hp and year in many cases is only applicable to certain s/ns for that year.

Here is an example of a page showing what I mean.
