wandering tachometer

when idling, the tach wanders around from about 100 to 3000 up and down sometimes stopping at 2000 then wanders again. I know i'm actually idling at about 6-7 hundred.

1992 3.0 OMC with esa ignition

That is usually a symptom of a bad recifier.

and where would that be? I know where they are in outboards, but not on an IO

Look at the back of your tach, should be a dial for different settings. Remember where it's set and turn the dial back and forth a couple of times and see if the readings settle down. Also check all the wiring back to the engine, dirty connections can also cause the problem, but most likely it's the tach itself.

I'll check it out. the boat sat for many months and I've just restored it so maybe a bad connection. thanks for the suggestion
