Inside the cowling, on the pan, where the fuel line comes in, should be a metal tag w/the info stamped on it.

Older Forces don't have an welch plug or any other place than the sticker on the side of the transom mount.
If it's faded its gone.J

Jesse-C;

As none of us know if the engine was original with the boat, try this and see if there is anything there. This can be used to cross reference the s/n:

Force Casting Number
The cast number is located under the ignition plate on the starboard side of the block, beside the top bypass cover. The cast number will be either a six-digit number ending in 010 or a number starting with either 800 or 818, ending with C, then a number. For example: 800-153-C6

Sorry Jesse, that is just a part number.

Here is a range of the 125s produced in 1986. Even if your engine was produced before or after 1986, the model number format will be the same.

125 1251F6A - 1251FC6A 1986
125 1251F6B - 1251FC6B 1986
125 1251X6A - 1251XC6A 1986
125 1251X6B - 1251XC6B 1986
125 1253X6B 1986
125 1254X6A - B 1986
125 1258F6A - 1258FC6A 1986
125 1258F6B - 1258FC6B 1986
125 1258V6B 1986
125 1258X6A - 1258XC6A 1986
125 1258X6B - 1258XC6B 1986

Jesse;

Again presuming that your engine is a 1986, yes, it should fit in the 1987if they are both the same height engines.
Are you familiar with measuring the transom on the boat or engine to see what drivehaft you need?

Here is a link to see what I mean:

http://www.boatmotors.com/ref/shaft_length.html

You will see that there are different shaft legths depending on what size transom is on the boat. The distance where it says "Approx shaft length" is where you would measure both engines to see that they have the same length driveshaft.

So, you have to know that the 1987 engine has the same length driveshaft as your 1986.

Clear as mud??

That motor is an 87 or newer.Looks like an 87/88.Need pics of the other side to make sure.
Like Gerry said measure the transom.They made 2 sizes a 20 and a 25.
The lowers will fit if the shaft is the same length.Frank A knows what lowers will fit.
The gear ratio from a 125 IS different from an 85.
It will work,just run a bit different.J
The main differences between an A/B/C model are very small.Almost any part will swap from one to another. The cowls are different, that's about the big difference.J

He doesnt want to change the lower units, he just wants to change the
driveshaft which is the same part number.

"The gear ratio from a 125 IS different from an 85"

I have no idea what you mean by this.

Some people try to use a lower unit from a 125 on an 85.The gears are different.

85 what? Horsepower or year?

If you are talking about 85hp, how did that even enter the conversation?

I think the 87 years had black CDI's. Yours are blue so is most likely 88 or newer. Based on pics it looks in really nice condition. Hard to believe the model # is not on it somewhere.

Gerry, swaping lower units and parts.I was just making clear if he bougt a complete lower to make sure he had the right parts. That ok with U?For new people I try to give as much info as possible.Black CDIs are a later replacement. All the Forces in the 80's came with blue.CDI's and coils.
