I am making a template to mount my engine to the new transom. Should the be a space between the top of the transom and the mounting bracket on the engine. Thank You

Yes there probably will be. Your cavitation plate (or whatever it's called) should be even to about an inch or so above the boat's keel. That will probably result in your motor not sitting the whole way down on the top of the transom.

Re: Ready to mount my engine.

It depends on your engine mount, but most are made with several bolt holes to allow the engine height to be adjusted up or down. I recommend you start by mounting the engine in the uppermost mounting holes. (lowest engine height) If possible mount it so that it can be moved up in to the next mounting holes, raising the engine height, based on testing you will do at the lake. ezemobee's suggestion may be a good baseline to start from, but arrange your mounting setup so that the engine can be adjusted. Ideally the engine will sit as high as possible without cavitating the prop at high load/ speed. In the right position the enigne will run more efficiently with less drag and better fuel economy. Not to mention optimum speed.

Re: Ready to mount my engine.

Here is a link to a BIA pattern template which is universal (supposed to be) and does work with major outboard manufacturer's.

What motor are you mounting?

Bob, I do not see your link. Did you forget to include it, or is it my browser?

Re: Ready to mount my engine.

I would like to thank all who have helped me. I really appreciate the help. I now have another question. I have a lip on my transom as shown in the pictures. It is 1/2" higher than the transom. I think I should notch this lip so the motor bracket will rest on the solid transom not the lip. I would really appreciate some input. Thank You. I have attached some pictures.

Re: Ready to mount my engine.

No. I would actually mount a piece of wood or starboard to the exterior. Take a look at the picture.

The motor will probably NOT actually sit on the transom but be bolted to the outside. MANY of the V-4 mounts are not seated on but above that transom edge. When you are measuring be sure to measure the vertical distance straight down and NOT along the transom it self. You will not get a proper measurement measuring on the transom....Since the transom is angled slightly.

Re: Ready to mount my engine.

Oh I understood what you are trying to do. The measurements will tell the true position.

So, there was never a motor mounted there? Do you have a pic of the entire hull? I do not see any splashwell drains nor do I see where the steering linkage will mount. If you are using a standard steering cable ........ it might be necessary to mount it BEFORE the motor so you can install the cable through the tilt tube.

Is this an earlier photo or have you completed the "finish" work?

Re: Ready to mount my engine.

If you can .. add the trans plate between the motor and the trans like Bobs pics showed..

You can cut that flange off if you like..and you can set your motor to the spot you need..but having a trans plate or SS lapping trans plate would be good.

I would not direct bolt on trans/splashwell with washers. Your plate will greatly improve loads across bare fiberglass.

Re: Ready to mount my engine.

I have another thread and should have continued there, but the lack of responses. This is a replaced transom. When I cut out the old transom I saved some the the formed fiberglass parts and reused them. There are splash well drains in place and the cables and linkage will come out the hole you can see on the starboard side aft. If I sit the motor on top of the lip, the top mounting hole will only be about 1/2" fromthe top of the transom and this bothers me. Everything I read says the top hole should be 1 7/8" from the top of the transom and no less then 1 3/4". .
