well, the motor runs great while idling. but when i put it into drive and get on the throttle, it won't go over 2000rpm. it's not my carb. it's in perfect shape and very clean. i took the carb cover off and sprayed starting fluid into the each of the carb openings while i was on the throttle, but nothing happened. it would have taken off it were a fuel problem. so i did some research and asked around and had a marine mechanic tell me it was the stator. i replace the stator, and the problem is still there. i'm pretty sure it's an electrical problem. any ideas?? could it be my rectifier?? any feedback would be great

I have the same problem with the same motor. I have a stator on order. The stator ohmed out bad. Also just got the DVA adpater to trouble shoot as CDI says.

hopefully, you'll have better luck than me with that stator. let me know what happens with yours.

Tho it is NOT recommended to use ether in a 2 stroke, it's a pretty good indication that yours is an ignition problem.

Rather than keep throwing money (parts) at it you need to diagnose the problem.

Start with a simple spark test to see if you have one or more dead cyl's.

Repost your findings then we can proceed.

A DVA meter will be needed to properly test the trigger, stator, and switchboxes.

we tested all the plugs, and they all fire great.

A DVA Meter is needed, And an OEM MERC MANUAL for that motor

Just because you see a spark on a plug in open air doesn't mean that it'll fire under compression.

Proper diagnostics are the fastest and least expensive path to a repair.

The statoro has two sets of windings, low speed and high speed, it is possible that a high speed winding is weak which will spark test fine cranking yet severly limit power as RPM rise.

HOWEVER, a bad switchbox can also limit power,

THUS, DVA testing all ignition parts to determine the root source of your problem WITHOUT spending a lot of money on un-necessary parts.

Those engines were known to have powerpack problems,It can be difficult, sometimes,to determine which pack is bad as they are connected together by a short white and black bias wire that can shift the symptons between the two packs. The safest fix,but not the cheapest,is to replace both packs, because the other one will probably fail shortly after.
