1998 Merc 200 Need advice

I was out on the lake today and I went to start the engine and it just started humming and it would not turn over? I had been on the lake for about 3 hours when this happend and I started the motor over 5 times with no issues? It got dark so I wasnt able to troubleshoot, I plan to do that in the morning. Any advice on what it could be? and where to start?

Does it try and start? Maybe the starter not engaging?

It does not try to start, when i turn the ignition you can hear what I think is the solonoid? But the motor is not tunring over.

I did remove the kill switch lanyard to off and tried to start it and the noise did not change, kill switch maybe? Its confusing because everything was working fine and then I go to start it and nothing?

My solonoid is bad but mine just makes a click and thats it, I know its that because I jump it by by passing it and then it starts..
