Went fishing yesterday.........caught some nice fluke in the ocean. Mercruiser IL6 w/ pre-alpha drive. Noticed that a few times when shifting from reverse to neutral, it stayed in reverse when I thought it was in neutral. The interupt seems to be working ok and the lower cable is new. Any ideas here? I am hoping it's just an adjustment and not something wrong with the lower unit.

Shift cable not properly adjusted will cause this. It will probaly be the remote cable length when you get that right then readjust the shift cable. cant remember the remote stroke off hand. do you have a book?

Lookup "adjusting remote shift cable" in your manual, or go to www.mercstuff.com and they also have instructions on how to adjust the cable. Don't run it like this, or you will strip the clutches out. If it's not coming out of reverse when in neutral, it isn't engaging into forward far enough!

Merc also started installing spring loaded shift assist plungers to help find neutral - they are easy to install, you might want to look one up and install it.

Not too keen on the shift assisters. They hold the cable pre-loaded to neutral so if there's any wear in the system they can cause a 'no shift' problem.
