Hello all,

I recently purchased a '86 XR-2 that runs well and will be going on a 20 footer. I want to make sure the cooling system is in top shape before it goes on the water.

Obviously I want to change the impeller. So, I need an impeller kit and thermostat. Does this engine have poppet valves? If so, would it be a good idea to change everything out since I'm starting fresh as a new owner?

Thanks for advice and clarification!

Pull down the water pump and replace what's needed. Impeller and gaskets is a given, housing, base plate, seals, slinger as needed.

Mount the engine. Install a water pressure gauge if there isn't one now, and check it out on the water.

Poppet normally is trouble free, unless you get into a lot of debris. I guess if you find a lot of crap in the LU and a water pump obviosly damaged by grit and debris, then check into the poppet valve.

hope it helps
John
