If you have an oil resevoir and the oil is green in color, then it is a two cycle.Four cycle engines have their oil contained in the crankcase.

Post the Merc serial number of your motor. Color of oil isn't always the best way to determine what you have.

Re: 4-stroke or 2-stroke?

Just look at the engine cover. They usually say "Four-Stroke" if they are indeed a four stroke. If it is a two stroke there would be no such text on the cover. If the engine has a resevoir under the engine cowl it is a two-stroke. If the engine has a dip stick to check the oil in the crankcase, and the engine has an oil filter that looks like the one on your car (just smaller) it is a four-stroke. Although a two stroke also has a dip stick, it measures the oil in the oil resevoir, not the crankcase. Just looking at the engine should also be a clue. Do you see camshaft covers? Yes = four stroke. No = two stroke.
