Alpha One shift linkage

I have 5.7/260 Alpha one

I think this is a common problem. The center/neutral detent is not real positive, i.e. especially when going from fwd to neutral, you have to pull back a little from center. I have gotten used to this, but family members have a problem (obviously when docking when it's pretty important).

Is it possible to adjust this out of the linkage, or does it just come with the territory?

Thanks for any help.

Re: Alpha One shift linkage

I know they offer a "neutral assist plunger" that helps. My boat came with a 5.0 liter but when I bought the boat I replaced it with a new 5.7 liter crate motor from Mercruiser. I noticed the new engine had the spring loaded assist already installed. It is available to purchase separately, and is easy to install.

the assist plunger will help. make sure you make sure your intermediate shift cable is not stretched. it should measure 6" from center of the barrel to the center of the eyelet while in forward gear
