Hey all, I'm new to the forum but have found a lot of good info already here. I have found a project boat that I am interested in purchasing.

Here is a vid I took of it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3WGFsP9I4w

It is a 1983 Chris Craft Scorpion 21 with OMC 260. It was brought in as a trade and has been sitting for almost 2 years. When I went to see it, it was uncovered and probably hasn't had a cover on it for a while. The interior is pretty bad, but the pics they had of it when it was first brought in were pretty good. It doesn't have a trailer and was brought in off the water, so it was seaworthy two years ago.

First question is, they offered to put it in the water and start it for me, but don't know if that is such a good idea after it has been sitting for this long. Should I low ball them and buy it as is, or get them to start it for me and pay higher price and risk water getting in dryrotted bellows or starting on old oil/plugs/etc?

Next is, What should I look for? I will look to see if any of the decking is rotten. If decking looks ok, is it ok to assume stringers underneath are ok? or no? Would I be out of line to ask the dealer to take the outdrive off and check transom for rot before I buy?
...what would you do?

Also, I would like to redo the interior to 2 captains chairs and u-shaped rear seating with a sunpad, but am not familiar with how hard it would be to brace and glass it all it. Has anyone done this and would this be a good idea?

It is a shame to let this beautiful boat sit out in the weather and die. I know this is going to require a whole lot of time and money and I am willing to learn and do it on my own. THanks for all of the info from the forum and thanks for your time.

-Cheers,
Chris

Ayuh,.... That's the problem...
It's an antique, dead horse built by Obsolete Marine Company....

Stringer drives weren't the Best, even when they were buildin' 'em...

Save yerself a Boatload of Hassles,.....

Keep Lookin'...

How much did you think about spending - over all?

It is a cool boat though - does the drive train work?

Is the floor soft? Total interior redo? How are the steering and control cables? Do the guages work?

You can look for most of the questions you have above - get a screw drive and flash light - and pop the hood on everything.

If the drive trains works well and it is structurally solid - then you are just doing cosmetic work - if engine+structural = there are plenty of boats out there!!

That's a real nice looking hull. However, it's been left out in the elements, is surely rotten, and has a completely obsolete powerplant. I personally wouldn't take it on as a project even if it was free. Look for something with a Mercruiser or Volvo powerplant.

The old engine and drive alone would steer me away from it.....take the advice given above.

Starcrafter...I was planning on spending about 12-15K on a project over the course of 2 years. (with motor/outdrive replacement, and interior)

everyone else...Ok OK, i get the point. I'll keep searching I guess. You gotta admit that it has some sexy lines and hull looks good. I really like the idea of a chriscraft, but maybe I'll find something else.

thanks for the replys

Chris, we're all onboard with a project. We just all feel that you'd be WAY ahead if you started with a Mercruiser or Volvo setup. The OMC Stringer was COMPLETELY different than other drives and nothing from it would be compatible including the huge hole in the transom. Shoot, even a trashed Merc would put you in much better shape than an old Stringer.
