Coleman 1000W portable generator...

I just bought a little Coleman generator - 1000 Watt - for ninety bucks at a Farm & Fleet store. Couldn't resist it at the price. My needs run from none at all to very occasional as I want it for power loss emergencies at home. It will run my furnace or my refrigerator, with a little left over for lights.

Of course, this is horse after the cart -- but does anyone have experience with the Coleman brand of generators? This is the model CMO4101 - two-stroke engine with 12VDC and 120VAC outputs.

Reliability? Durability? Problems?

Thanks all.

Just do not let the wife plug in her 1500 watt hair drier, or the 1200 watt toaster or the 1200 watt drip coffee maker. :D

For only $90??? Let us know how big it is and how loud. That sure sounds like a nice price. Sounds like something you could throw into the camper for emergencies.

I had one of those a few years ago and it ran pretty well and used it mainly for running hand tools where there was no power. It's a great little generator for camping too.

Just don't expect to make a lot of friends if you use a Coleman at a campground.

The Coleman is like running a lawnmower. It is that loud but for his stated use its OK. Emergency use only. I have a Coleman 1850 that I bought new on the cheap several years ago. Its OK but it is to loud so I purchased a Honda EU2000i. Much quieter and I use it on my boat and at home when the power goes out. At home the Honda will run the furnace, fridge and TV. Its a good backup for those times the power is out.

I think you'll find its like "2footitis"... you'll want to add more things and it just won't have the guts to do it. Especially if you have a lot of outages.

Pirate, it's about 30 pounds and has a carry handle. It's easy to move around.

Eagle, this may be the same one. It's 1000W peak; 900W sustained.

And, yeah it makes a bit of noise, but doesn't strike me as louder than most of the others I've seen. (Not counting Honda - at five times the price.)

Well, nobody has posted any reason for me to regret the purchase. That's encouraging.

That should be reason enough!!!

For $90 you got a fair deal. It will do for running hand tools and such....and some lights when camping. As for running your heat exchange or a refridgerator I'm afraid it won't have enough to start either one. Running an electric motor doesnt take near the watts as starting one does. Unless your fridge and heat exchcange are really small I'm afraid a 1000kw generator is too small for either one.

I would not complain at $90 that was a good deal, I had the 1850 for years and it never failed me, I have since upgraded to a 6000kw that will pretty much run the house, but that little 1850 did great for camping and running a couple of power tools when I needed it.

For the price you paid you would have been unwise to pass up on such a deal.
