Hi folks. I trawl for trout using my Mercury XL 150 saltwater series. I trawl at low revs, basically just above idle speed say 750 - 900rpm. I run a large chrome racing prop for skiing as well. I trawl around a freshwater lake for maybe 2 - 4 hours at this RPM before I give it a burst at higher RPM's. Question - does trawling with this V6 motor harm the motor? I guy told me these V6's don't like operting at these low revs and over time something rattles loose on top of the pistons and ends up destroying the engine? I have 720 hours on the motor and bought it at 600 hours. Can any one back this statement up by applying some science or personal experience or put to rest my fears. Welcome to iboats!

What type of induction does the motor have- fuel injection or carburetor? A fuel injected motor, even a 2-stroke, can deal with extended periods of trolling without a problem.

Relax, Trolling will not hurt any kind of outboard motor. It may load up a bit and stall, but no damage will occur.
