Re: tohatsu 1986 9.9
Few parts remain for those early models (no carb kits, etc.), unless as NOS on some old-time dealer's shelf.
362060220M TRIGGER COIL-NO LONGER AVAILABLE
350060210M EXCITER COIL-NO LONGER AVAILABLE
However, the CD module (362060601 is superceded to 362060602M) is still available:
362060602M C.D. IGNITION UNIT (CU15 KOKUSAN DENKI) $179.60
And the ignition coil (362060500 is superceded to 3M3060481M) is also available:
3M3060481M IGNITION COIL W/RESISTANCE $43.73
If you need parts for the charging circuit, which is independent of the ignition system, the alternator and rectifier are as follows:
350060230M LIGHTING COIL $48.27
(346761601 is superceded to 346761602M)
346761602M RECTIFIER KIT 8B THRU 40C $99.78
To diagnose the ignition system, you will need to verify whether you have shorted or open trigger or exciter coils. If bad, you are done, as no replacements for those are available. If OK, then check the CD and coil resistance values. If you get an ambiguous reading at the cd or coil, connect a DVA to the primary side of the coil and see if you are getting at least a 50-100v pulse from the CD. If yes, problem is at the coil; if no, the problem is before the coil.
Grab your good Analog ohmmeter (not a digital unit), (you should have DVA capability on the meter to read the pulse from the CD to the coil), and a copy of the Factory service manual, 003-21035-1 $42.47. Once you diagnose it, and possibly get it running, you will likely also want a water pump kit: 362873220M $46.42.
