i just rebuilt the transom on my 15ft aluminum boat. It was originally riveted so i went back with stainless bolts with washers and lock nuts and nylon inserts. I sealed the holes and around the blots with 5200 marine sealant. it has been a few days and the sealant is still soft, it is kind of cold out side would the temp cause that and if so will it be alright in a few days? and is there anything i could do to improve my chances of no leaks.

ps i did have to put a few holes in the bottom which i sealed as said

Re: 5200 marine sealant

5200 is a moisture cure sealant, so it needs to be in a humid environment to cure. You could tape a wet paper towel over it, (if it won't touch) or drape a wet towel over the whole thing. Just figure out a way to keep the air around the 5200 humid, without touching the sealant, and it will cure.

FWIW, I've cured 5200 on small parts by hanging them in a 5 gallon bucket with a bit of water in the bottom, the 5200 was completely cured in 24 hours.

Re: 5200 marine sealant

the proper sealant for alum noats is by marine tex....its called gluvit....

however 5200 is really good glue/gook.

hit it with a quartz lamp....get it a little warmer....and with a plant mister....spray the 5200 every 6 hrs or so...(dont get too anal and wake up in the middle of the night to spray your boat)...leave the light on for 24 hours....but dont get too close with the lamp.....that sucker will bake cookies !

Me too. Did my 16 ft. Jon Boat. Same way. 5200 did cure. No problems at all. Drilled out all rivets and inserted SS bolts and marine plywood. My guess is, your 5200 will be fine.

Re: 5200 marine sealant

I personally dont like the SS on alum..I would have used alum Rivs and fast cure 4200..

The regular 5200 is going to slime and drip all over :( ..the fast 5200 will not have this problem.

I dont know if you should start over..but if the 5200 has not cured by this time.. I would.

I wouldn't Gluvit over the 5200. Once 5200 cures it's pretty darn tough.

Kind of depends on where he lives. Out where I'm at (desert) 5200 takes for ever to cure without some "encouragement", not enough moisture in the air to get it cured. Covering it with something moist does the trick though.
