9.8 requires excessive priming

I have a 1979 merc 9.8. The problem is it won't start when the primer bulb is hard. It takes a few more pumps until fuel comes out of a pee hole at the front of the carb. When I see fuel drip down it will start everytime. Also after shutting down the motor for about 10 minutes or so it requires the same procedure.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Ck the float level and the low speed pickup tube for crude.

I checked both. They seem OK (Im a rookie). I pumped fuel into the carb with the bowl off to see what was going on. It took extreme pressure to get gas to fall. I then took the fuel line off and blew into the tube (I believe thats the fuel pump). I couldn't hardly get any air through it. Is this normal? Thanks

If you have gas coming out of the carb then needle and seat is possible worn out or the float height is set wrong. As for blowing through the tube you shouldn't be able to or the diaphram in the pump would be bad I'm guessing.
