Merc wont start without a squirt of feul

I have a 1985 merc blueband 7.5hp, thunderbolt ignition and I can't start it wiyhout squirting somr fuel in the carby can anybody help with this?

First do a compression/spark test.Then the fuel system:check the fuel pump and then the carb.
Remove it and use any spray cleaner.Don't use carb soaks.
Ethanol weakens rubber and delaminates the inside of the older hoses.Make sure the gas in the tank is new.New plugs next.Jerry

does that motor have a butterfly choke? if so make sure the choke plate is closing completely..if it has the injector thingy then check it.

The compression is 120psi in each cylinder, I noticed that when you pump the primer petrol squirts out of carby, is this normal

A little gas(couple drops) is ok.A lot no.Sounds like you need to rebuild/clean the carb and while your at it do the fuel pump too.Jerry
