Tachometer replacement "76 135

Can I use an automotive tachometer on a 1976 johnson 135? the manual says not to use a tachometer that isnt designed for the motor. Its a sunpro tach.

Sorry, you can't do that. You must use a tachometer that is designed to operate off of the engine's charging system, one that can be set to function on six (6) pulses.

are your sure your tach is bad...could be your rectifier

Well The boat sat in the sun for alot of its life so i was replacing all of the dash components but i guess ill buy a marine tach.

check on e-bay sometimes find a whole set of used gauges cheap..if you are trying to save $$..but used stuff is always a gamble
