I have a 1974 mercury thuunderbolt 20hp and the threads on the lower unit by the prop are all beat up and I think it needs replaced and I am having trouble finding one. I did find a 1974 40hp lower unit but I am not sure if the two motors use the same lower unit or not.

What threads are you talking about?
The threads that hold the prop on?

No parts on the 40hp will interchange with the 20hp....sorry. If it the cover nut that holds carrier in place be careful as they made a metal and a plastic one and threads are different....

Re: Mercury 1974 lower unit problems??????

The threads are broken and smashed together and will not allow the BEARING CARRIER ASSEMBLY part to screw in before the prop is put on. It is the threads that are on the inside of the lower part of the gear casing. Any ideas on where to find a reasonably priced lower unit or how to fix the one I have?
