When I put my 2004 115 Mercury, carb engine, into gear it bogs and dies unless I just slam it in then sometimes it takes off and sometimes bogs down and dies.

This started right after I changed the starter switch after breaking off a key and when I replaced the key switch I just cut the wires and twisted them together and taped over them.

Have I fried the stator or is possible I have a bad ground causing this problem and wiring the key switch better will solve.

I have a wiring diagram and volt meter, but have not dug into this due to time and cold.

If anyone has done this before and fixed it, I sure would enjoy to here some good news.

Welcome to iboats!

Could you have wired it wrong? Isn't that a push the key in to choke set up? This could have caused a problem with the enrichment system.

Is your tach still working? That is an indicator of a fried stator

If you are just gonna twist and tape, dude at least use wire nuts. Solder and shrink tube is proper. This is, after all, a wet environment.

Tach is still working, so that makes me feel better.
