Power Pack Problem?

After my 225hp Johnson get good and warmed up, it will almost shut down with me at any speed but will continue to idle if I hold it around 800 rpm's. If I give it the gas it will die but I can run 2-3 mph in gear to get back to the dock. If it sets for an hour or so, cranks and planes out okay. Then once it gets hot again, it back to the condition stated above. Is this a power pack going bad?

It does happen. Components inside the power pack can break down after getter hot.

Under the flywheel is the stator (round thing with various coil windings). This is the beginning of both the ignition and charging system. Look at the two larger black coils at the rear portion of the stator. If they are leaking/dripping a substance down on the powerhead area, that causes a voltage drop to the powerpack when the stator gets hot resulting in weak, erratic, and eventually no ignition. If this condition exists, replace that stator.

The above especially holds true if the engine runs normally (or close to it) when cold.
