I would like to refinish my 1946 Johnson 5 HP and would I be hurting it value of the motor if I put a Clear Coat over the paint?

I don't think a clear coat would hurt the value at all. That motor is probably worth more to you than anyone else, so I'd say go for it.

Go ahead. Lots of folks clear coat their restored motors. Use quality paint if you intend to use the motor at all. Spray paint may not hold up to gasoline.

I have never painted an engine but if you want some good tips, go to nymarine.ca.
