new tach instal

hello, i have been reading about tach installs for my 87 v4 88spl on the forum and found on my control box below the key switch a black rubber "plug" about an inch long , that has amp written on it . could this be where the tach plugs in. there is a gray wire coming from the engine i assume that is the signal wire mentioned on the forums could i cut in to the harness and find this and connectit to tach?

That is a tach connection. It has +12 volts (key on), ground, and the tach signal. You can make your own plug if you are the least bit "inventive" or you can tap into the grey wire, or you can buy the tach harness here or at Cabelas. Your call.

I saw those harnesses for about $10 somewhere but cannot remember right now...google it.

When I did mine I used stranded copper wire and soldered the ends to make a pin that fit in the plug holes, it worked pretty well and you don't have to cut into any wires.
