Hello, I just bought a 40 HP Johnson outboard engine, 2 cycle Model# RDS-30S
the fellow I bought it from cut the wires and didn't know which was which.
There is a large red & large Black (-) & (+) battery.
There is a smaller black, smaller white, smaller Grey. One Red with white stripe , a brown and another black. Does anyone know where these go?
Thanks a lot. :)Merry Christmas.

Electric shift or manual shift?

Here's a wiring diagram for an older manual shift, it will be quite close.

50:1 oil/gas ratio. check your water pump impeller and lower gear unit oil before testing. And having a manual will help a lot if you plan to keep it. Those engines were around for a while so parts are easy to come by.

RDS-30 is a manual shift. Electric shift was Rk-30. Here is the diagram for a RDS-30. Ignore the generator parts if you don't have one.

EDIT: If no generator kit, the green wire connects to the "bat" terminal of the key switch, and the brown wire is not used. Also, no ammeter without the generator kit.

Hi Steve
Thanks a lot for your reply.

Do you know which wires I put together to start the engine?
I know which to put together to run the starter but don't know which to jump to turn the spark on. I don't have any key switch, just the wires. All I have to do is jumper two wires to turn the spark on I am pretty sure.
I have cleaned the motor up very good and am almost ready to test run it.
Thanks for your answer.

Why would this guy have cut the wires? Hope the mtr is not a little "warm".

As long as the 2 black wires aren't tied together (seperate) it SHOULD have spark when cranked, all the battery does is drive the starter, they have a self contained ignition system (magneto).

Green wire goes to battery terminal.-----Brown from generator goes to the other .terminal.-----That way the needle will deflect the correct way to show current flow to or from the battery.
