i have a 1978 johnson 35 hp outboard that is currently a short shaft and i am trying to turn it into a long shaft i couldnt find any kits for this year but my question is will a long shifting rod and drive shaft work off of a 1984 model johnson 35 hp?
i believe the driveshaft will work but not the shift rod (in 1979 OMC moved the shift connector behind the water inlet screens on the lower unit). The shift linkages are completely different.
Now, you will also need a long shaft exhaust housing, as there are no extension kits. And if you just bolt up the exhaust housing and l/u from a 1984, you won't need to worry about the shift rod nor linkage.
