This Granny has a jet boat on my bucketlist..so found a 94 Dynasty Jet Storm/Trailer/New Jet Pump but has bad motor and all electrical components are gone so did pick it up cheap.....I am torn with rebuilding the 90 Merc Sport Jet power head or selling the New Jet pump to help convert boat to outboard..
have body work and welding experience...please advise or should I get the motor rebuilt? I see it going either way but I will be using boat mainly to cruise in creeks and go to alot of springs to gather with friends here in florida I am worried of sucking up sand and debri in shallow areas whereas outboard tilt and trim might be better?????

Junk it out, reinforce the transom, install a jackplate and 60hp. Only bad thing about a jet is if you get in less an 2ft of water it starts sucking debris(sticks, rocks, cans, bottles) off the bottom thru the pump...

faztbullet..

In reading your comment about "jet pumps" I would like to comment that I have ran both inboard and outboard jets for over 30yrs. on many small rivers in Oregon and have never collected a can, bottle, stick or other debris when on plane. I have ran many times in water as low as 8 inches and bent a few shoes, but that's my stupidity.
The only problem is when shutting down, you must be in at least a couple feet of water.

Re: 90 Mercury Sport Jet Advice

I too have ran jets and having a 2" stick stuck on your loader at 100 mph is uncontrolable. I used to drag race in the KDBA with a 16 ft texas tunnel, american turbine jet, "c" cut impeller, 454 bored .100 to 505ci, t2xtunnel ram, twin 1050 holleys, nitrated crank,etc,etc,$$$... Like you said, rarely at plane but idling and planing in shallow water tears impellers and grates to h***. What usually happens is boat is beached, shoved off and reverse gate is dropped and engine reved up to back up and this blows all the debis off bottom and into intake..
