I've got a 1996 Johnson 9.9 outboard that will cold start perfectly fine. But once its been running and is warm, will not restart. I talked to my mechanic in N. Carolina and he said that it could be leaking at the head gasket once the motors warm, and losing compression. Is this even possible? Has anyone had a problem like this? And, will replacing the head gasket solve anything?
thanks

Re: '96 Johnson 9.9 trouble restarting

Welcome to iboats.

There are a couple ways to approach this.

Perform a compression test with the motor cold and one while hot....... That should answer things.

If you need a head gasket, they are very easy to install. You need a gasket, a gasket scraper, the proper size socket, a torque wrench and most important a repair manual.

I would sincerely guess it is either the fuel system or a cracked coil.

Thanks bob.
I just ordered a new gasket yesterday so i guess ill see if that changes anything.
Looking around for a minute seems like the coil is a pretty common problem with this motor. How hard of a swap out is this, do they even sell this coil anymore?
also ill look into the compression testing.
thanks for the help

A '96 motor around here is brand new! Yes, they sell coils for your motor and they are easy to replace.

Re: '96 Johnson 9.9 trouble restarting

hi.
i had the same problem with hard restart when gets warm.
the problem was bad head gasket and wraped head.
i paid 5dolars for flattening the head at autorepair garage.
now its fine.restarts every time first pull.
head gets wraped after overhiting problem.
so after head fix i had to fix overhiting problem(bad upper water tube gromet)
