whats the diff from a 470 and a 488? how do i know if i have a 2bbl or 4 carb? boat was made in 84 so do i have a 84 motor and alpha one outdrive?

Ayuh,... Nothing, more than the Vintage...
470s were known by many names, but they're pretty much All the same..

in looking at service manual #3. i think you may have found the basic difference. the 470 has a 2bbl. the 488 has a 4bbl.
as for how to tell if ya got a 2 or 4bbl. i suppose look down the air horn and see if ya got 2 venturies or 4 (2 throttle plates or 4). looks to me like the 488 had the qjet 4mc, the 470's had either a rochester 2gc or a mercarb on them. both 2bbls.

serial numbers will help id what you have.

Quick way to tell if your not carb savy is look at oil filter. If it is horizontal and screws to block its a 2bbl 470. IF its vertical and screws to an adapter, its a 4bbl 488, these have an oil cooler built into intake manifold, hence the adapter....
