Lower unit seals

I have a merc 125hp year 2002 outboard. When I drained the lower unit it came out a thick white fluid. I assume I need to replace seals. I replaced my water pump before and have a shop manual. Would this job be better left to a pro or is it not that bad? Any idea what it would cost have the seals replaced by someone?

Thanks for any input you may have.

Re: Lower unit seals

First thing, remove prop and inspect for monofilament fishing line wrapped around prop shaft and getting under the seal causing it to leak and/or ruining the seal. then check your drain/fill plugs gaskets/washers which can leak water into unit, then drop lower unit and inspect for bad driveshaft seals or bad shift shaft seals. The prop shaft seals replacements can be challenging due to special tools and removal of the bearing carrier, which can be difficult to remove due to saltwater/corrosion. Hope it's one of the easy ones! Good Luck!
