Re: rotation

I had an 89 Sundancer and both engines were standard rotation from factory. What does the serial numbers say on the engines or the trannys? Look at the props they are different from one another if they are counter rotating...

Re: rotation

Prop rotation has nothing to do with engine rotation. Transmissions can be made to turn opposite.
Are your engines Mercruiser? If so, what is the serial number of the bad engine.

Re: rotation

The standard turn "CCW" will have the firing order same as a car, truck and most likely the numbers on the intake.

The reverse turn if you have one. "CW" will have a different firing order and may very well be different than the intake numbers.

So if they both turn the same way they will be wired the same.

Re: rotation

Check firing order. Ollk at distributer and find your #1 wire. Then look and see what cylinder the wire next to it is going.

Standard rotation firing order= 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

Counter rotation firing order= 1-2-7-5-6-3-4-8

Re: rotation

maybe a dumb question but i thought whole idea of opposite rotating motors was to make boat run smooth, counter act each other wouldnt your props have to turn opposite each other.

Re: rotation

Yes the idea is to have one prop cancel out the torque of the other.

Many years ago this was mainly done with one standard engine and one reverse turn.

Then compaines made gear cases and transmissions that could be reversed. This took care of the prop torque but some purest didn't like the lift provided by two large engines turning the same way. Now we have a mix of options to deal with when working on twin engine boats. rotation is looked at from the rear on a boat and from the front on a car. So it is not unusual to see people order the wrong parts and even the wrong engine. Some confusion takes place when ordering parts or a replacement engine for the "counter clockwise engine. That is a standard turn engine and it uses a reverse turn starter. ( I just had to put that in there.) The reverse turn engine rotates clockwise and uses a standard turn starter. (if mounted from the rear)
