I am trying to replace the Keyed Ignition Inside the Controler arm box. I am unable to get the Controler box open so that I can replace the Swtich. This is an old boat that my grandson & I are trying to refurbish by spring. 1973 65 HP Evenrude Motor on a SoftMate boat. Someone has jamed a screwdriver into the Key Slot. Can anyone help Me?

Thanks Charles

Re: Keyed Ignition Broken

Not sure what your trying to deal with but speaking generically first if it is an evinrude key there may be a number on the lock face and you could get a key at a well established Evinrude/johnson dealer. If damaged you may be able to simply drill it out.If its a motor switch you can buy a generic switch at the dealer or NAPA but you will need to figure out if its a magneto or battery ignition.

Re: Keyed Ignition Broken

If it truly is a 1973 65hp, it is mag CD ignition. Too bad some genius ruined the old one by jamming a screwdriver in it. New switches are available right here at iboats.

The box lays open by simply removing the screws. Of course it has to come off the boat first, and the handle has to come off. A screw in the back holds the handle on. Loosen it a couple of turns, then give it a whack with a hammer and punch. That will dislodge the handle.
