Hello all, I am going to look at a 1987 70hp evinrude OB this saturday and was wondering if this is a good year and what to look out for.

Re: 87 70hp evinrude

Any 80s Evinrude/Johnson is a good engine if it has been cared for, in my opinion they are some of the best engines made.

I know you want to avoid any Ficht engine but I don't think the came out till after that.

If at all possible run it on a boat, short of that hear it run on muffs and if you can't do that at least do a compression check and a spark check. compression should be wihin 10% hot or cold and 100 or better is good.

Excellent motor. Absolutely IDEAL for your hull also.

Thanks guys, here is the ad on CL I am going to look at sat. I offered 700.00 for it and he accepted it so I may have another boat. I just want the engine of course and will sell the rest.

V8mgbal,

Its this one, right?

http://atlanta.craigslist.org/atl/boa/2088521793.html

That guy has been trying to unload that boat and engine for about three months now. no takers. Basically wants to sell the motor, and have someone haul away the boat and trailer so he doesn't have to dispose of it. Check that motor out well, b/c there must be some reason (aside from asking too much for it) that he hasn't been able to sell it. I was considering it when I needed to repower my boat, but in the end I decided to roll the dice on a 1976 motor for $400 instead (so far with no regrets, as I got the motor with controls and the rack-system steering plus some other random parts for my boat for $400). From the ad I get the impression you are not going to be able to start it, so at least make sure you check compression, spark, foot oil, etc.

Good luck.

Rgds

If that's the boat.....

Nice windshield on it. I'd be interested in those low-profile bow rails if you get it :D

Thanks vega that's it. I will check it very closely and I was thinking about that windshield for my boat also EZ as it looked good on your jupiter. there is also a 85hp johnson in dallas ga. on cl with controls and no boat for 400.00 but I am not sure if that is too big or not for my boat but EZ you loved it on your boat right.

That 85 is a great motor also. Not sure I'd want the weight or not. It sure would be interesting to test a 16' SC with a big 3 cyl versus a small 4 cyl. That's a sweet price for that 85. If it has power TnT it would be an extra sweet deal.

I got an email from the guy with the 85 and he said it was a 1979 model if that helps.

Pretty sure that's good. It will have either come with TnT or be able to easily retrofitted with the "modern" style of TnT unit (unlike my '73).

Re: 87 70hp evinrude

I'm on my second 70 hp OMC-went from 1988 to 1987. Note: there was a change to the motors at that time. Good solid motors; lots of parts and experienced repair shops around!
Having an eletrical issue (mystery short) but that could happen. However the wiring harness is very expensive!
I bought the motor with a boat, trailer and lots of toys; kept the motor and sold the hull and trailer to the shop who did the swap; got the motor and toys for about $300.
Change the water pump as soon as you buy it. Also check the lower unit oil--but even if it's watery, it's not hard/expensive to reseal them.
