At the bottom of the upper gearcase on the 83 3.0 OMC Stringer there are 2 identical seals. Part number 981268. These seals are installed 'back to back'.
My question is, are the seals supposed to be installed flush with the housing, or recessed into the housing? The books call for a 'seal installing tool' which would make me think there should be some amount of recess below the rim of the housing but I don't know.
