71' Merc 135 L6 TypeII. Purchased, tuned up(Carbs cleaned), replaced wiring harness, new battery, new fuel, BUT I have no spark at the PLUG. Please help or en-lighten me as what to do next. The distributor looks good, inside and out. Plug wires are a little chaffed . Thanks NEW TO BOATING IN COLORADO, "skinny dipper" DB:cool:

DB, Does that motor have the single switchbox mounted on the front cowl support, in front of the carbs? If so, make sure the red wire is hot (+12VDC) at all times and the white wire next to it gets voltage when the key is in the on and start position.

You might post compression numbers as well.

Don,t give up now, you have one of the best merc inlines going, that 1350 deserves to run with the big dogs again. Like Chris says, check the compression first, all six. If you have good compression we can walk you through the troubleshooting for no spark. If your compression is low in one cyl your task is a little more daunting but there are lots of folks to walk you through it or get you to a specialist that can do it for you. Keep posting:)

Db, 9 out of 10 times, it's the ignition/switchbox that goes bad. As chris stated, it is located on the inner cowling frame right in front of the carbs. There is a method to test it. First, do the test that chris spoke of, then rotate the flywheel until the number 1 piston is near Top Dead Center (TDC) then locate the 3 wires on the box where the distributor wires hook up...disconnect the 3 distrib wires from the switchbox (there's a black, white and brown wire from the dist.) with the distrib wires disconnected from the switchbox, put a jumper wire between the brown and white terminals on the switchbox, now make a wire about 8" long, hook one end of it to the black terminal on the switchbox...turn the key to the on position...now take that wire that you hooked to the black terminal and "strike" that loose end to the motor framing (ground)...it should make a spark when grounded, if you get no spark, it is the switchbox, if you get spark and can here the coil clicking when you strike that black terminal wire to ground, then it is the coil. Most likely it is the switchbox.

I know this is an old thread, but the above post fixed me right up. Recently traded for an 88 bayliner 1700. The PO has swapped out the stock force 85 with a '70 merc 135. Motor would turn over but wouldn't start when I got it. Cracked open the covers to find wires so dry rotted they fell apart in my hand. Found a replacement harness and installed it tonight. Still no go. Did a little iPad search in the driveway and found this thread. Found the power jumper wire in the new harness not hooked up. Boom....she is alive ! Sounded pretty damn good for a 42 year old motor :)
