lower gearcase

I am attempting to replace the gear oil in the lower gear chamber of my 9.9 HP Evinrude. At the store (Canadian Tire Store), I was told that the most popular gear oil for this is Outboard Gear Oil Type C, and therefore I bought it.

Then I read this forum. Someone [with the user name "jegervais"] said (and/or implied) that Type C is not in use anymore, not available, or not even suitable for this use.

Is this true? Is it likely to harm my outboard engine?

Re: lower gearcase

I buy the Penzoil outboard lower unit oil. I think it is 80 weight. You can find it at all the big retailers in a kit that includes the pump to fill it. You should be able to find your user manual on evinrude/brp website.

The type C is used for elecrtic shift lower units.

Re: lower gearcase

Type "C" MUST be used where it is specified, but I believe that it CAN be used in any lower unit.

i.e. I had an OMC 55HP that required Type "C" and I until I sold it used Type "C" in my two small E/rudes with no problems....(that I am aware of...:))
Saved having to keep two different L/U lubes.

You DON"t say what year the 9.9 is. There is NO "electric shift" on your 9.9, regardless of year.

BUY NEW FILL/DRAIN plug seals, and a few extras.

OMC/BRP Premium Blend is right for that engine.

There are others but I NEVER recommend other than OEM.

do you also use brp 2-stroke oil in the fuel? I know people that use wal-mart brand oil for everything and never had any troubles. What is the weight of the OMC/BRP LU oil?

Found this from pennzoil's website here:

http://www.pennzoil.com/documents/Pennzoil Marine Power Trim and Tilt Fluid.pdf

This has got me wondering if I'm using the correct LU oil as well.......

APPLICATION
PENNZOIL MARINE? OUTBOARD GEAR LUBE may be used in all outboard gear cases where an SAE 80W-90 API
GL-4 gear lubricant or older Type C is specified. Older models (prior to 1978) sometimes require special products. Check
your owner's manual for any models over ten years old. Johnson and Evinrude models with electric shift (1972 and earlier)
and pre-1977 OMC Stern Drive require Pennzoil ATF Automatic Transmission Fluid.
PENNZOIL MARINE? HIGH VISCOSITY LOWER UNIT GEAR LUBE may be used in lower units calling for a marine
grade SAE 80W-90 API GL-5 gear lubricant. It is also recommended for lower units that require an SAE 90 Hypoid
gear oil.
PENNZOIL MARINE? POWER TRIM & TILT FLUID is an all-purpose hydraulic fluid that may be used in trim and tilt
systems as well as power steering systems.
PENNZOIL? 100% SYNTHETIC* LOWER UNIT GEAR LUBE may be used in transmissions and lower units which
require an API GL-5 SAE 75W-90 gear oil.

This response is from Dave Brown (see below)

Type C is specifically called for in electric shift gear cases (of which yours is not one). The recommended oil for your gearcase is something called "Hi Vis", or better yet the new HPFX Synthetics now used across the board in Evinrude motors. Type C won't harm it, but it's very thin and can leak quicker out a seal, plus it won't provide nearly the protection the newer oils will. Feel free to post this back to the message boards.
