Hi all. Just got a non-running '61 QD-22 10 hp I traded for an elec. trolling motor running after it was sitting for quite some time thanks to all the help here (woot woot). I rebuilt the carb, cleaned the points, and installed a new water pump(that was interesting), and just generally gave it the once over. I actually got her running and just as I started to dial in the carb, I ran out of light (of course).
One question for when I try to dial her in tomorrow; what can/should I do to the high speed needle while in the test tank? Just the standard one turn out, or should I do something else. Thanks.

High speed will have to be adjusted in the water at WOT to optimize it. Once optimized, then idle her down and adjust the low speed for optimum trolling.

thanks lindy46. So I went out today to try to "fine tune" the low speed needle. Got her to run, but at fairly high rpm. Tried to get it down to lower rpm, but would always konk out :/ Was able to get it to start a few more times and run for a bit, but still couldn't get low rpm dialed in. Now can't get to start at all. I've adjusted and readjusted needles in every possible combo I can think of :/ I know that the high speed needle is most important in getting these guys to start, so I 've left it in the position it last started in. Other than that I'm at a loss. What in the world am I missing. Got spark, compression, fuel, and bloody knuckles and a sore back from pull starting all morning. Argghhhhhhh!!!!!

Others may have better suggestions, but it sure sounds like possible issue in the carb. I couldn't get my 5hp Johnson to idle down at all. Turned out to be a bit of crud in one of the channels. On mine, the idle channels have very small outlets and it didn't take much debris to cause a problem. Once cleaned, it now idles nicely.

A good ballpark setting for your jets are:

1 1/2 turns out from lightly seated, on the low speed and 3/4 turn out on the high speed. You may end up turning the high speed in as much as 1/4 turn for best performance and the low speed 1/8 of a turn.
