I was reading some posts on the Breezeworks 470 forum placed by a guy having fuel pump problems. It made me wonder if anyone has converted from a mechanical to an electrical fuel pump on an I/O.

If not, what's your opinion on why it would/wouldn't work?

Howdy,

There's no reason why it wouldn't work. It does work. I think Mercruiser even has kits to do it for some models.

To do it right (read:safe) however, you must wire the pump so it cannot pump fuel unless the engine is running (or cranking)

That entails wiring the pump to the starter solenoid circuit so it's powered while cranking......and wired using an oil pressure switch so it gets power any time there's oil pressure.

You'll need a pump certified to SAE J1171 (marine) standards that will provide no more than about 7PSI for a carbureted application.
