I never said not to paint :) .. I only said that I might be one of the few that does not just Paint as a fixall .. ( he said he read the forums ).

Im only asking why Paint..and stating that no bondo..and asking for pics..

I never suggested not to paint :) . Some boats should consider it..

BC/CC.... thats a totally different animal...Trust me..I know...

Re: Cracking Gelcoats

I dont know what you want me to expand on the BC/CC ( Base Coat then Clear Coat ). ?

Or is it you want my opinion on why BCCC is a different animal then regular paint or gel ?

I will answer a direct question if you have one..but just to expand... I dont really know what your asking ( I have been reluctant on giving info on paints..especially when the materials used say right on the can " For Professional Use ONLY ". .. they dont sell this stuff at Home D :) ).

Still looking out for pics to show up here :) ...

Re: Cracking Gelcoats

When you say repair and Paint .. do you mean the whole deck ? or just spot paint ?

( Id gel repair myself )

The floor Im sure you will hear some " Time to redeck/trans/stringers " .. so have you investigated these allready ? I mean to say..do you know the status of the structural portion of the boat.

Re: Cracking Gelcoats

from that first pic it looks to me like your stringer if so you need to further investigate and determine if they are sound . while your at it check your transom as well. no sense in painting anything until you know how sound your stringers and transom are. you can take a 1/4inch drill bit inside the transom (do not drill all the way throgh ) i would start 2-3 " at center of transom from the bottom . if dry and light colored good ,if wet or blackish replace. same with stringers fore and aft . send more pics of the orientation of the hole with the length of boat ,so i can determine wether its a stringer or cross peice . which may not matter if rotted stringer most likely also

IMO..BCCC is extensive prep and time consuming..Repairability is harder.. and its expensive. Application is IMHO harder then regular paint or gel.

This is Just from my experiance..

Re: Cracking Gelcoats

that boat is going to need a major stringer replacement as well as the deck.

I want to redo the stringer and I need to know how to repair the stringers.

read the link in my sig....it has detailed info on everything you need to know about stringers/transom.

as far as the gellcoat vs paint.......im with YD...

i just rescued a jet ski from smashed to bits itis (lol)
due to a number of curcumstances.....we were forced to paint the watercraft.....
it came out allmost perfect after 50 hours of detailed prep/sanding.

i could have done the job in gellcoat in a fraction of the time.

cheers
oops

Re: Cracking Gelcoats

On the stringers can I cut the 2X4's out keeping the fiberglass on the side of the board and replace the board and reglass the new board one at a time?
