Starter Problems

I have a 1986 90 Johnson, this past weekend the gear on top of the starter did not want to pop up a couple of times, it would spin but not come up to engage in the flywheel. After a couple of tries I got it to start. During the season sometimes it seem to drop before the engine started. Does this just need to be cleaned and lubed or need to be replaced.

It may just need cleaning. It should be spotless with no grease. A drop of very light machine oil, like sewing machine oil is all that's needed.

It's in now for the season, so I will clean and give it a little oil....thanks :)
