I have a boat with several screws coming out of the side. (added some trim inside the boat -screws way too long) some above water line some below. What would be wrong with leaving the screws in. Cutting them off, drilling them down just below flush. Then filling with epoxy. Then sanding smooth and trying to match color.

Re: hole in fiberglass

You would be better off taking the screws out, filling the holes with epoxy, and then putting some "shorter" screws back in.

Re: hole in fiberglass

Welcome to iboats.

First do not feel bad about what has happened........ it is a common error ;)

The reason ondarvr mentioned that method is because..... screws will damage the fiber's and shatter the polyester resins........ eventually they would get loose and create more damage.

Removing the screws, filling the holes with epoxy will restore the integrity, use shorter screws, do a slight gel coat repair on the outside and no one will know it happened.

Since we have pointed you down the epoxy road...... IF you need more "bite" for a trim panel.....then you may consider installing a wood block adhered (out of sight but in a required area) to the hull with epoxy.

There is nothing wrong with what your saying...

So you screwed through.. no biggie..

IF its gelcoat you want to match and color Gel ( Epoxy fils should not be your first option)..

You can Snap or grind but your grind will have to be through the gelcoat ( on the outside ) to the glass. ..just enough to reach the glass..then fill and fair..

Your finish is another matter..depending on paint or gel :) .

Pics would really be nice at this time...as we dont know what the finish is..

YD.
