Carburetor problem?

I made this post earlier and thought I had found a broken reed valve, but this was not the case. Also, the crankcase doesn't appear to be leaking anywhere, since there doesn't appear to be any spray anywhere around the crankcase gasket. Could a crankshaft seal leak cause this problem, or would it just run rough?

Someone brought a 9.8hp to me to repair. They complained that the engine would bog down as they tried to accelerate. They also noticed fuel leaking from the carburetor. I checked the compression and spark: both were good. I removed and cleaned up the carburetor. When priming, fuel squirts from the carburetor's main port when the bowl is full. Inspection of the float and needle valve reveal nothing unusual. I can only start the engine with full choke and with the throttle position at start. After the engine is idling, reducing the choke causes the engine to rev. up excessively. Reducing the choke and throttle together prevents the excessive rpm but the engine will die as the process continues. Any ideas about what the problem is?

Sounds like it might be a timing issue. Is the spark advance moving as you twist the throttle? Is the flywheel orientated properly?

Start by taking the fuel pump apart.Check the diaphram. Then the needle seat.Make sure there is nothing in it.The main jet is also the low speed idle, make sure there is nothing in the small holes in the jets.Use a magnifying glass and look in side.
Reset the air screw.Bottom out and back out 1 and 1/8th turn.Turn it in till it just starts to miss/cough/stall then out 1/2 turn.Should be done in the water in gear and warm.
Ethanol is messing with a lot of motors.J

HUH?

When you prime it, the bulb should get hard, but it shouldn't spill fuel. It is possible to overcome the needle valve with a white knuckle grip on the primer ball, but if normal pressure causes fuel to spill from the carburetor, something is wrong with it. There's no other answer.

Needle and seat, float, gaskets, cracked casting, whatever.
