I assume that the problems are related but you know what they say about assuming.....

Recently when cranking my engine there is a cloud like puff of white oil specks that blows out of the prop. It seems like too much to be oil from the fuel but I am new to these engines. A few days after noticing the oil I started having trouble shifting into neutral from foreward, I have to jam it into reverse then to neutral. Any ideas? thanks.....

Sounds like you need some new seals in the gear case/lower unit. Probably shouldn't use it much until you get that addressed.

Thanks, I have stopped using as soon as I realized the problem. Would bad seals cause the shifting problem? Where would you recommend finding the parts and a repair manual?

Bad seals will allow water to seep inside, that's bad for the gears and will screw up the way it shifts. I'd bet you can get the seals right here at Iboats and the service manual from www.outboardbooks.com. Plenty of good advice here on this forum to!
