Ok guys and gals, Today I changed my impeller for the first time and thought I would do a write up.... This will be per the OEM manuel but with my suggestions thrown in there.... oh and I tryed to do it by myself but had to holler at my wife to help hold things and whatnot, I would recomend a friends/wifes help

REMOVEAL OF GEARCASE

The gearcase (lower unit) may be removed from the exhuast housing and powerhead as follows:

a. Disconect Battery (I found it easyest to put the engine at full tilt, up, and locked first)

b. Drain lube from gearcase and remove propeller(this step is per the manuel, i omitted this step and it caused no trouble for me)

c. Slide back the insulating sleeve on the shift cable wires so the wires can be disconected. (open engine cover, and look on the starboard side, you'll see two wires that rundown toward the lower unit)

d. apply some type of lubricant to the loom to ease it passage down as the lower unit comes down and off. (I used wd-40, worked fine for me)

e. mark trim tab and lower unit so it can be reinstalled in the same position.

f. remove trim tab bolt, remove trim tab

g. there is another bolt under where ther trim tab was remove that one too...

h. Just forward of the trim tabs location is another bolt to remove

i. now there are only four bolt holding the lower unit on, two on each side port/starboard, remove these bolts as your buddy braces the lower unit...

j. Now pull the lower unit out, taking care not to damage the shift wires as they are pulled through.

k. remove the two flat head screws from the top of the impellerhousing, this allows the peice on top of the impeller housing to be removed and for the shift wires to be moved out of the way. (take care not to lose the two plastic sleeves or the two rubber gromits)

l. remove the four bolts holding the impeller housing, lift the housing and impeller off the drive shaft taking care not to lose the impeller key...

m. remove impeller from housing and replace with new( I found it easest to twist as I pushed the new impeller into the housing, kinda tricky but you'll get it)

n. the impeller is offset on purpose, when reinstalling over the driveshaft use the driveshaft to line up the offset holes. (you will understand when you get to this step.

o. making sure your impeller key is there set the impeller housing all the way down and replace the four bolts for the impeller housing.

p. replace the wire/water tube guide making sure ther two rubber gromits are inplace and the two plastic guides are inplace, reinstall the two flat head screws.

q. now then, I suggest that you run inside and grab a wire coat hanger, straighten it.... from the top of the motor, where the shift wire went through, guide that hanger down through(this takes a little patience but you'll get it)

r. now using electrical tape, keeping the bundle as narrow as possible, tape the hanger end to the end of the shift wires(use a whole roll if you want its cheap stuff and will save a big headache, its worth it) go up and down with the tape at least 4 inches in each direction so it is really secure...... I tried other ways like fishing string ect... and I had to relower the lower unit like 5 times....(the hanger is what worked for me :) try what ever you want)

s. your ready to reinstall the lower unit, having your friend/wife/whoever pulling the shift wires though as you lift in the lower unit, making sure your water tubes go into the guides (be sure the rubber o ring is still at the tip of the drive shaft before your reinstall.)

t. if you are having trouble getting the lower unit to go back in flush, try having your helper turn the flywheel as you apply pressure to the lower unit (I had this problem and this trick solved it for me.)

u. From this point (if you omitted step "b." like I did), reinstall all your coresponding bolts, reconect your shft wires, make sure there are no "left over parts" (except old impeller) replace engine lid and you should be good to go....

I hope this saves others some of the headache I had to figured out as I was doing it......

Rather than the bit with the wire hanger when you are ready to reassemble, I would suggest that you secure a piece of wire or nylon rope to the shift solenoid wires BEFORE removing the lower unit. When you remove the LU, let the wire feed through the leg. When you have the LU off, secure the piece of wire in the leg at both ends so it doesn't slip out. When you are ready to reassemble, just attach the shift solenoid wires to what is now a guide wire, and pull them back up. No muss, no fuss.

HI thread. Just read your guide to removing the gearbox on an evinrude(mine is a 60hp) I cant get the gearbox to separate .It is loose but wont come down have I missed anythingelse or should it just drop? i dont want to use too much force or lever the gap and damage the cases.Regards Andy
