what anodes do i need to replace on my 1988 volvo penta 290, also is there a special puller for my prop , is the nose cone an anode? the boat is in salt water

Single prop or DuoProp drive? Anodes are different, neither has a nose cone that is also an anode. The prop/s just slide on and held in place by a threaded nut of some kind, and no not require a puller. If you need a puller, the prop is froze to the shaft. May have to destroy the prop to remove it.
In salt water, you need to remove the prop/s yearly and grease the splines.

thanks don s its a single prop (sorry bout that), i bought a anode kit and it came with one for behind the prop, another bar anode that i know where to install and a small triangle anode that i cant figure out where it goes, where does this go or was it a mistake, it was in a seperate plastic container

The trim fin on a Volvo isn't an anode,

I don't remember any small triangle shaped anodes on a 290, could you post a picture of what you have? Was there a part number on that container?
Does it look like this?

sorry it took me soo long to reply, new computer took a few days to get up and running, Don that pic is not what i have, im thinkkg it was a mistake but the number on the part is cm8 72793z. thanks again for all the responses

That is not a Volvo number, so hard to say what it is. Post a picture of it. That would cure many problems.

Never mind, just remembered the CM is for Canadian Metals and they make aftemarket anodes.

Yes, it shouldn't be with your kit, and is a mistake, and it is for the XDP drive.

Spare parts are supposed to be for able to be used for your boat.
Those are small enough to be used for sinkers in deep water ........
