Due to F-R's praise of the '63 10hp, and to make him as jealous as possible, I bought one today! ;) It came with a brand new hose, atwood tank, and most importantly---a nice 10th edition johnson service manual.....

Has a new shifter boot, new pull cord handle, and looks good. However, the head does look like it got hot in the past due to missing paint all over the head. Either way, compression felt good. Owner says it just has 50% power and it served him well for the last 5 summers(he bought a new motor recently) -----I'm hoping for a bad coil as I just bought 6 for 13 bucks apiece a few weeks ago. Going to test compression and spark, and lower unit oil and see if I've got a goodun'. At $75, I shouldn't go in the hole too bad.
Also going to adjust shifter on my '98 30hp and report results.

Re: Just bought a '63 10hp evinrude

I hate to say it F-R, but I readjusted the brand new coils that were already on it while ago, got good spark, and it fired up and ran perfect with some low and high speed adjustments. :p The point gaps were totally messed up.
It was well worth the money! It also had brand new fuel lines, shifter boot, boot for the recoil thing-a-majigger, etc. There was very little paint missing on the motor---just a little worn off the skeg.
Pumped water good and stayed nice and cool. It was dark and rainy so I didn't check the lower unit oil. I've got my fingers crossed that it will hold gear at full throttle.
I'll try to get some pics and post 'em. I have to admit, the fiberglass cowl does make it a wee bit quieter than the 50's motors.
I suspect I won't be able to make myself sell it. I really like the QD motors. The fuel pump is nice, too!

Does F R also like the 62 10hp model?

Oops!
I'm working on that! It's raining today and I'm trying to get my stuff ready for duck season, whine, whine........
Will try to do better. I've got to send you some pics of my '72 50hp, Steve. I've actually got it running pretty darned nice. Gotta find a throttle cable, steering system for it, though.

61 - 63 are pretty much the same motors, maybe just a minor difference in decals. 59 and 60 have the earlier style fiberglass hood. I have a 10hp which is about 1962 model, which I'm going to part out.

Alrighty then.....
Here's some pics of the '63 10hp. And, a pic of the newly rebuilt '72 hydroelectric 50hp with cheapo ebay crank and piston and new rings and gaskets. It will probably disintegrate when I get it running wide open but it idles good right now.
The evinrude seems like a nice motor. That nasty head is sure doesn't inspire a lot of confidence. It'll probably run forever, though.

Congrats on getting the 50 running, and getting cheap-o parts. I finally sold mine whole to a guy locally here who needed the controls and a drive shaft.
