Hi I recently aquired an 87 four winns freedom 160 with a 3.0 L alpha 1
Is there a water pump on the engine and an impeller in the lower unit ? The boat was completely winterized and fogged in 2007 and stored in a garage.
If so will I have to change the impeller only or the whole kit ? also ,is the lower unit suppose to be sealed ? I will be buying a service (repair) manual.
Thanks

Re: stern drive

Just impeller would be fine. Don't forget change all filters fluids etc. Probably going to have the most trouble with the fuel... as there is probably water and crud in there. Goodluck!

Re: stern drive

I'll give my $.0002 worth.

I would change the complete impeller kit, including the upper and lower housing, especially on a boat that you just aquired.

Here is a video on separating the upper and lower half of the drive:

and here is another video on replacing the impeller in the drive:

and since your from MA, here is Mercruiser manual #6 for your Alpha one:

(while your browsn on that site   do a search for #10, that'll cover your engine.) ;)

Re: stern drive

Thanks for the info and manual. Although I could use another link to the service manual #10 because I'm not sure how to navigate on that site. Thank You

Re: stern drive

There is a pump on the motor,it's a circulation pump.Take the drive off and inspect the water pump.It could be just an impeller or the whole pump.
If the housing(inside) is wore or lots of grooves.Or the bottom plate has wore and lots of grooves replace both.
Make sure the oil is clean and the seal between the cases is there when you put it back together. It's supposed to be a sealed unit.It might have an reservoir inside the boat for drive oil.If not it's a good thing to have. It's an indicator of something happening in the drive.
Then worry about Ethanol.See my signature.J
