Volvo Penta AQ170A/270 Upgrade question

I just purchased a 1972 Glastron with the Volvo Penta AQ170A inline 6 engine and the 270 out drive. I just winterized it and started to get bellowing clouds of white smoke from the exhaust. What I am trying to find out at this point is if I should rebuild the engine or replace it. I was considering replacing it with a larger engine and was not sure if there were any horse power limitations of the out drive or if I needed to replace the outdrive all together. Thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. This is my first boat so I am fairly new at this. Thank you for your help!

Repowering the boat will require a complete drivetrain. Including the engine, outdrive, and all the parts in between.

If you can repair the engine you have, it would be much easier. However, parts for the 170 are getting harder to find and are expensive.

Has the boat been used in salt or fresh water?

Thank you so much for the response. To my knowledge the boat has only been in fresh water, however, it does seem to have been registered in Oregon in the past so I cannot be fully sure it has purly been in fresh water. Where would be the best place to look for parts for this engine?

What kind of parts are you looking for? Rebuild parts? Tune up parts?

What kind of tests have you done on the engine so far. Compression test?

Maybe you could explain what the engine is doing a little better. You said you just winterized and its blowing white smoke. Did it ever run without the white smoke? Did you ever have it in the water? I asked about the salt water because the exhaust manifolds for those motors are prohibitively expensive.
Salt water eats exhaust manifolds.

Before putting a lot of money and time into this boat you better go through it and make sure its worth it.
