Hello new member need some help. I have searched site for info before posting. I have a 1972 running johnson 20hp outboard that I am trying to replace water pump, I have done this on other johnson motors with no problem? I have removed all lower unit bolts and shifter link and unit will only drop about 1/2 inch but will not come out. Any ideas on what I have forgot or need to do. Thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum! Hope you get lots of useful info here. Lots of great people here willing to help. As far as your problem goes, I suspect the driveshaft is stuck/rusted in the crank. Have you had it apart before? May be someone forgot to replace the o-ring at the top of the driveshaft, water got in there and it rusted. Id try getting some penetrating oil up in there and let it soak awhile. You might try turning the motor upside down and let gravity work for you - run the oil down the driveshaft.

You have to remove the lower screw from the shifter link completely as it sits in a slot cut in the linkage. That could be holding it up. Rick

Thanks your suggestions did the trick, took screw all the way out and presto it came right out. There was not a o ring on top either and it was stuck from rust I guess. Thanks a million gentlemen u have a great fourm. GO TEXAS RANGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
