I am looking at an Evinrude 9.9 HP outboard and would like determine the age of the motor - Model # EBREDS, Serial # G 04021102.

Any help would be appreciated.

Is there any way to confirm that this is a 9.9 HP engine as the owner is not sure and I don't see it listed on the engine itself?

The model number tells all but you have misread or misquoted it

The model number of an Evinrude 9.9 will start with or contain the letter E followed by the number 10 eg E10REDD

I think you have misread a numeral 8 as the letter B

E8REDS is the model number for a 1996 8 hp

8 and 9.9 look very different see pictures HERE

I did not notice that when I read your original question earlier today. Very surprised Ezeke missed it too.

I could not match the model number except for the ED indicating 1996. The serial number falls within my list of 1996 serial numbers, so I believe that 1996 is valid. BR in a model number stands for "Euro, Rope Start".

A BRP/Evinrude authorized dealer can confirm the model information with BRP, based on the serial number.

No doubting that it is a 1996. It's just that the number quoted is not a valid number for anything

A 9.9 will include 10 in the model number but its impossible to make anything in the number quoted into 10.

Since there is some doubt as to it actually being a 9.9 the most likely explanation is that the number 8 in E8REDS has been misread as a letter B

E8REDS is a valid number for a 1996 8hp

E8REDS or EBREDS they look pretty similar . One is a valid number , the other is not.

No sign of BR, meaning Euro ropestart, in any listed 9.9 numbers either.
