Gang,

any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a yamaha 90 hp 2 stroke 1999 year model can't remember the exact model # but engine starts up fine runs for a few moments and then safety alarm comes on and engine shuts down to safety mode - will go but barely.

I have put in a new thermostat, a new water pump, new spark plugs and same result. I have plenty of oil so that's not the problem either. I have unhooked the alarm but engine does the same thing after running for awhile. I'm sort of lost as to where to look or diagnose next. I lost my job about 6 weeks ago RIF, and am interviewing for a new one. Normally I would take to the shop and have them trouble shoot but I don't have a couple hundred dollars laying around so was trying to fix myself while having some spare time.

Any advice on what to look for next and try? I"ve taken the water pump apart several times and put back on, just checking and everything seems to be fine because I do have water shooting out of the pee hole.

Frustrated boat owner.

Thanks,

Re: Yamaha engine shuts down to safe mode

we are going to need the model number.
we are going to need what tach you have, pictures would be most helpful.
all the tell tell indicates is that the water pump is working, means NOTHING about engine cooling.
also is this fresh or salt water use?

The model # is 90TLRY - 1999 2 stroke Yamaha.

I'm posting links to pictures as suggested. Also I found a link from reading this post that discusses cleaning heads, etc but will take any advice before I go that route, sounds like a lot of tedious work and the work doesn't scare me it's me scaring myself that I will cause more damage than fixing the problem.

Re: Yamaha engine shuts down to safe mode

somewhere in that motors life its been smoked.
note the discolored paint on the head.
it also looks like the tell tale isnt plumbed correctly on the ex plate.
looks like its been apart as well.
looking at the corrosion its a salt water motor.
I would remove the head and ex covers and have a look.
still need pics of your tach.
